Marijke died as a result of domestic homicide.  After going through reactions of grief and horror in response to her murder, we all became inspired to see that this never happen to another family.  Unfortunately, it very definitely does.  Every day in the United States, over three women are killed due to domestic violence (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2003).  Our aim with this page is to spread knowledge of domestic abuse/violence.  Recognizing a problem is the first step in stamping it out.

National Domestic Violence Hotline

The most dangerous time for a woman is when she leaves.  While it is an incredibly life-affirming decision for the victim, it can also lead to increased violence, threats, stalking, and even murder, for this is when the abuser is losing control.  If you know someone who is trying to get out of an abusive relationship, calling this hotline (or a local one, such as Heartly House in Frederick, MD or House of Ruth in Baltimore, MD) is HIGHLY recommended for safety tips.
